I absolutely loved the first book by Shevlin: “The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax.†I’ve actually read it several times and thoroughly enjoyed it each time, thus I thought I’d try the next book, “Jonathon Fairfax Must Be Destroyed.†Unfortunately, this one was a big disappointment. *Warning: Some spoilers ahead*The first major problem for me was: No Rachel! In Book 1, Rachel was the perfect girlfriend for Jonathon, but in this one she is shipped off to France and never heard from again. I suppose the author thought it’d be funny to free up Jonathon so he could bumble around falling for a new love of his life, but for me it simply didn’t work. It reminds me of the old soap opera trick where the couple has a child but later it gets inconvenient to the story so they have the child go upstairs in one episode and he never comes back down, gradually fading completely away from the story. Jonathon is not a James Bond, where he has to have a new love in every story.The first book was perfect, and in truth, my wife actually got so tired of me bursting out laughing as I read it that she stopped taking me out in public till I finished the book again. I’m sorry to say, that didn’t happen with book two. It was cute in places and I’ll admit there were several parts that I found amusing, but not once did I laugh out loud, let alone burst out in gales of laughter like I did in the first one.The bad guys in the first book were odd and vile, yet I could accept their characters as real. But the bad guys in this book were just too unbelievable. In the first book Shevlin has a true winner; unfortunately the formula just didn’t work in book two. Read it if you wish, as some really seem to like it, but I don’t really recommend it and don’t plan to ever read it again.
Hilarity ensued! I don't know how to begin describing how much I enjoyed reading this book. I was in tears and gasping( yes, gasping is real!) for breath because it was the only way I could keep from rolling on the floor! You can read the publisher's blurb to understand the premise and plot. But only by reading the book will will you get to roar with laughter as Jonathon winds his way through the labyrinth of working at a company which is not a company, producing a product that only exists as an illusion, loving a woman he only bumped into on a train, while living with a woman he only accidentally rescued. The funniest moments for me were the attempts at murder, and actual murders made by his power hungry boss. They left me in tears again and again. This is a great read. Extremely well written and plotted. There are even semi-spying, dare-devil escapes, and sawing off an ear attempts ... using a ruler! READ THIS!
First, the bad. Two plus years between novels is too long, period. Second, the wait is worthwhile. In Jonathon, Shevlin has created the perfect anti- hero. He is a nerd, a klutz, a social nobody and a lost person, who has trouble finding himself, let alone a significant other. Yet, Shevlin guides this nitwit through a hilarious adventure that will leave you laughing and happy. What else could an author do than that? It is too bad that a third book seems out of the question based on this one's ending.
I love this guy’s work. He creates an absurdist’s reality that is laugh out loud funny and thought provoking at the same time. His Jonathon Fairfax is an everyman locked inside his own insecurities where even the most innocuous social interaction becomes a traumatic event. How he deals with rapacious corporate monsters in his struggle to survive in a heartless, cruel work environment is a lesson in passive resistance. Looking forward to more from this author.
fun and funny - found myself laughing/chuckling quite a bit -- and I'm an old cynic so that says a lot for the humor and wit of this writer. Story is well done, characters well drawn and not entirely predictable -- I'll definitely read the other book about Jonathon Fairfax (the continual astonishment) -- look forward to more from Christopher Shevlin!
This book is an entertaining, satirical comedy filled with amusingly quirky characters. It may be a bit preachy concerning corporate greed, but that can be easily forgiven considering it humorous underpinnings. So in short, if you’re looking for a quirky, fun read, then this book is for you (unless you happen to be a Fortune 500 CEO).
I bought this book because a year ago ago I had read The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax, by the same author , which I foundhumorous and witty.Unfortunately, this one shows little umour and wit . It is needlessly outstretched , without any justification. It is a frankly boring book
Christopher Shevlin creates a character in Jonathon Fairfax that you just like. He is bumbling and awkward but also so genuine that you want good things to happen for him and yet he alway seems to end up in situations of pain and eminent death. I am dissappointed that his story is over as I really enjoy reading about his adventures; however, his story ended just as it should.Give Jonathon's story a try if you like that very English kind of story (if you like these kinds of stories, you'll know what I mean), but read the first book first titled The Perpetual Astonishment of Jonathon Fairfax. Then buckle up for a bumbling kind of wild ride!
