For the price, this Oxford University Press Gift Edition of the Book of Common Prayer is hard to beat. Anyone looking for an inexpensive version for home or travel would do well to consider this version.PROS:* Lays flat, a real plus, and not always a sure thing with imitation leather or a book this small. Honestly, I was impressed.* The imitation leather "Vivella" cover has a smooth, rubbery surface that is unusual yet makes for a sure feel in-hand.* The quality is excellent for a book of this type and in this price range, with a well-made spine, good paper, and crisp typefaces.* Good use of white space keeps the text readable, despite being on the smaller side.* Includes a sewn-in placemarker ribbon.CONS:* The editors can't decide whether they will stick with "thee," "thou," and "thine" or use less archaic pronouns. That this seems to fluctuate throughout the text is annoying, especially when notes say these older pronouns will be italicized, yet they are routinely not.* While the small typeface is not a problem in most of the book, a few sections of notes are downright minuscule.* My copy came with some slight pressure damage to the sides of the pages.Again, for someone looking for a Book of Common Prayer, this is a great value. Recommended.
This readers edition of the BOCP is the perfect size for me. The paper is very nice and the size of the print is very readable in any situation. I enjoy praying the Daily Office and this edition makes it easy. I opted for the Genuine Leather cover and it is extremely nice! The leather is thick, yet flexible, made to last a lifetime.
This compact BCP is an ideal, compact size, but also quite readable, even to eyes of advancing years. Its "imitation leather" binding makes it flexible, though the imitation is purely theoretical. It looks nothing like leather, more like a vinyl/plastic melange, but it is nonetheless attractive. This edition does NOT contain the actual readings for the three-year cycle lectionary, but only gives Biblical references for where those passages can be found. So, one would still need an actual common lectionary or else a Bible, to accompany this volume.
This is a well-sized and well constructed BCP for personal use. It is nice looking enough to give as a present for a baptism, confirmation, etc. The biggest drawback is that the book is printed on paper so thin that you can read the print on the other side of the page or on the next page. (One can read the bottom of p.13 through the bottom of p. 11 quite easily!)I do not think that I would want to have it for my primary prayer book, but the price is right. I intend to give them to my confirmation class this year.
I an not an Episcopalian, but I occasionally worship at a nearby Episcopal church, and I have been intrigued by the Book of Common Prayer - so many resources for personal meditation and spiritual growth. I am quite pleased with this edition, which is lovely to look at as well as to hold. Just the right size. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a personal copy of the Book of Common Prayer - really to anyone who follows this religious tradition - because it supports and encourages turning to worship beyond the regular worship services offered by the church.
Same high quality I've come to expect from Oxford University Press genuine leather-bound bibles and prayer books (of which I own several). Beautiful leather cover, binding, print. Will use and cherish this book for many years to come. One observation: some of the reviews below do not seem to be for this particular OUP leather-bound edition of the Book of Common Prayer; rather, they seem to be for other versions of the BCP, of which there are many.
I had found a copy of this at a local thrift store and it had seen some use so I wanted to find one identical to it that was in good quality and at a reasonable price. I found that here on Amazon. The binding is beautiful and looks like it will stand up to some good use. The cover is so soft and pristine and I tend to baby my books so after almost 6 months it looks just like when it was delivered to me. The font size is readable and clear. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is seeking a BCP that can be taken on trips or anywhere without being too bulky.
As far as rating the content of the book...its the BCP! The book is well manufactured with the typical thin onion skin pages. The burgundy and gold is conservative yet beautiful. My only complaint is that I wish it had a ribbon to mark pages. Though that is easily remedied with a bookmark.
