Such an intriguing historical fiction, more historical than fiction I believe, and resonates with that part of my ancestry that is Irish. If any who read this humble review share any of that ancestry, I strongly recommend you read this story and others by Morgan Llyweleyn for a glimpse of that time that I promise will speak to you on many levels, not the least of which is nothing less than spiritual, whether Pagan or Christian. The trials and tribulations of a great and ancient people, battles and romance, with ALL the trimmings! Don't miss it!
A great historical fiction novel of the life of Brian Boru. The Lion of Ireland by Morgan Llywelyn is a keeper. She keeps the readers interest by an every changing dynamic in the story as we see Brian go from the youngest of 12 sons to the Ard Ri or High King of ALL Ireland. Brian grows up and learns how to take care of his own people. He also learns and teaches all the different Irish Kingdoms to think of themselves as Irish first and Munster men or Leinstermen second. He even works to include the Norse Irish and Dubliners into the Irish fold as all have shared the same land for generations. Through his growth as a King his women have helped shape who he is. First we have the lovely Druid, Fiona who is watching and protecting Brian in his struggles for Kingship. Then his wives Deirdre and Gormlaith who are very different women, challenge Brian and make marriage just another battle field for him. They give him his children too who he hopes to pass on his legacy and keep Ireland united. This was a fun and informative read. Very vivid in detail and shifts from historical, to adventurous and action packed battles to amazing fantasy and emotional romance. This book is a hearty and well seasoned stew of storytelling. I am hooked and have started its sequel, Pride of Lions also by Morgan Llywelyn.
Wonderfully written and researched novel. I rarely give a professional author who has access to numerous proof readers, editors and so forth who help make them look good, but this is a great book for all Ireland lovers (not just the Irish around the world.) While much of the book is fictionalized due to the lack of historical data, it is a view of ancient Irish history as seen through a crack in time. Lots of action, romance, love, hate, envy and deception. You won't be sorry you bought this book.
These used books, costing next to nothing, are the PERFECT gift for any incarcerated person you might know .... They will be devoured by an ever-so-grateful recipient, as it carries them outside the walls and into a world of imagination and fun. Next time you're in touch with that person, ask him/her what kinds of books they'd enjoy reading, then spend a coupla bucks - it will make a world of difference for them, and you'll feel good too. Don't let these books just sit on a shelf somewhere, when they can do so much good. Most jails and prisons will not accept books from you, only from legitimate booksellers direct, so please consider doing something like this, whenever you can afford to spend less than 5 bucks total!
What an awesome, sweeping tale. I love historical fiction. And, when one comes along that I fall into, with believable characters and a story that is as close to the facts as possible, I am thrilled. This is an amazing story about a man that united Ireland for a time. He pulled all the warring tribes together to fight a common enemy, the Vikings. And, he did it.
i was looking for something different - historical, romantic, educational, meaty. Something that wasn't fluffy and that i'd eat through in a day or two. This fit the bill. The characters were strongly developed, the history nicely worked in (so it didn't feel like a lecture), and the picture of early Ireland painted with clarity. I'm not big on violent war scenes, but they were done with finesse, and were necessary to give you a realistic picture of how grim life was during this time period. Enough romance to satisfy my female heart without making me roll my eyes and flip pages ahead. If you haven't read Llwelyn's books, give this a try. It's extremely well written.
Good fictionalized exploration of the life of Brian Boru, but too heavy on the battle scenes to be good read for me. Might be a guy book. I liked the writing style and I did order other of her books, but I am not a fan of war stories. One bloody sword after bloody axe got old by the middle of the book. I stuck with it to the end so that says something. If you like middle age hand to hand combat, you will love it.
Morgan Llywelyn 's research into the very history of this book is incredible. I love great characters but even more so when do many are based on real legends!
