The content is something you can find on the Internet for free. It is full of short paragraph followed by fill-ins of obvious stuff. There is nothing special or helpful about the activities. It is all stuff that any adult would know already. I was looking different ways of addressing and decreasing meltdowns. This is more about identify your and your child's emotion. It has a million how does that make you feel. I don't need a book for that. Tells you to think and to problem solve on your own. There are no tips or advice here. This was a waste of money. I found a more helpful book called How To Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish.

Love activities

What a great resource for parents and professionals alike! I can’t wait to start incorporating some of the activities with my own students.

Purchased this as a gift

DESCRIPTION: The book is formatted in a strait-forward and functional way. Each section (i.e., Understanding your child, Emotions and Feelings, Supporting Social Skills, Cognitive Skills, Building Coping skills, Family Dynamics) starts with easy-to-understand descriptions of what those areas are, and what it might look like if your child struggles with these skills. The activities are labeled as either for PARENT, CHILD, or PARENT-CHILD. The book provides concrete worksheet-style activities to help parents and children build awareness of, and develop these skills.HOW I WOULD USE THIS: The Speech Language Pathologists's (SLP) role is support language to support emotions. This book uses language to make this process more concrete. As a clinician, I would use these for quick/already prepared lesson plans. I would tell parents about this book when they ask, "what else can I do at home?". I would use the descriptions before each chapter to as a way to talk to parents, or to other professionals in an inservice.FINAL IMPRESSIONS: You should definitely buy this. As graduate students, SLPs are trained to help children use language as a tool to communicate wants/needs/feelings. However, it wasn't until I worked in a school, that I realized how much emotions and behavior directly impact my ability to be an effective clinician. Worse- we never have time to sit and develop plans to address these skills. So often, a student may experience a huge range of emotions during the day, or have meltdowns. These behaviors are tough for everyone involved, and are often the greatest barrier for teachers and therapists to help the student be successful at school. Continuing to work as a team means that everyone involved- at school and home- has prepared activities to put everyone on the same page from the get-go, and start generalizing the skills right away.ONLY RECOMMENDATION FOR CHANGE: I wish this book was available for electronic download. There are so many great resources- I wish I could electronically search/pull up on my computer while meeting with a parent, or print as a PDF rather than finding a copier. Ariel La, M.S., CCC-SLP

The Parenting Toolbox is a must have for parents who have children with emotional challenges and problem behaviors. This is a fantastic resource and gives parents a variety of tools to help their child learn coping strategies for stress and anxiety, as well as reducing undesirable behavior that makes life at home feel overwhelming. I recommend the Parenting Toolbox because of its practical approach to helping both parent and child reflect on how emotional thoughts impact behavioral responses. This book offers worksheets that are sorted into 6 topic areas for easy use, and each worksheet indicates if the activity is for the child, the parent, or both. Topic areas that are covered include: understanding your child, identifying and understanding emotions, social communication/exploring perspectives, cognitive skills (executive functions), coping, and family dynamics. I’ve been a practicing occupational therapist for over 20 years and work with children with various disabilities including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbances. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been an effective approach to teaching children and adults how to reframe their thoughts so that responses to stress and anxiety are within their power to control. This book uses CBT strategies and makes it easy for parents to help their child become empowered so that life at home is calmer and happier….Dr. Heather Boley, OTD, MS, OTR/L
