About the Author
Peter Rooney has more than a decade's experience working as an award-winning journalist for newspapers in Illinois and for the Associated Press in Berlin. Peter also worked alongside Gehrung Associates to help academic institutions tell their stories through the publication of research breakthroughs, unconventional wisdom from the social sciences, and other insights from academia. He was heading up communications at Amherst College when he was diagnosed with advanced stage kidney cancer, which had already progressed to his bones, lungs, lymph nodes and brain. He lives in Keene, NH, with his wife, Katharina.

Immuno-theropy patient Peter Rooney dives head first into the world of cancer treatment and it is rough going. "Immunopatient" is his personal journey in his fight to beat back this deadly killer. This memoir is carefully and painstakingly written to help the reader understand cancer research. treatment regimes and the science behind immuno-theropy. I felt as though I was sitting in on every meeting and treatment with Peter as he and his doctors methodically plotted a plan of attack. His account is both heart-renching and hopeful You feel his turmoil and angst as he battles for life week after week, month after month. Ultimately he prevails but one is left with this uneasy feeling that there is always going to be some level of uncertainty.I could not put this book down. A must read for anyone, not just those facing this dreadful disease. Peter's positive attitude and doggedly persistent for a silver bullet make the book an enlightening and uplifting read.
I just finished reading this extremely helpful book. I had a radical nephrectomy to remove my left kidney in November, due to the size (11cm) of the tumor, and involvement of the Vena. It was evaluated as Tumor grade T3a, negative margins and no lymph node involvement. This story, and the excellent way it was chronicled, has helped me start to understand the “next steps†and all the jargon that one must get through to comprehend what the doctors and reports are telling me. The info on the trials he participated in were extremely helpful because they are relevant to me, and very timely. You must read this book if you, or someone or someone you care about, has this dreadful and sneaky disease. If you wait for symptoms to show up with this disease, you're way beyond the optimum point to address it effectively. Get imaged at 40 years old, and every 5 years following.
