It is really too bad the author took shots at the Guide force at every opportunity. The authors bias against and disdain for the Guide force really was evident.
A very good history of Gettysburg NMP. Some infusion of personal and PC bias but not enough to ruin an otherwise well written history.
Jennifer Murray has written an engaging, in-depth history of the creation and management of the Gettysburg National Military Park. Although the title suggests her study begins with the year 1933, fear not. The first chapter also covers the period immediately after the battle up to 1933. It is indeed interesting to learn how local citizens first had the foresight and determination to promptly purchase tracts of land that we all now take for granted as part of the park. Veterans then entered the picture determined to save ground on which they and their fellow soldiers fought, bled, and died upon. Other individuals and organizations, both private and governmental, then followed.Dr. Murray appears to have opened and examined the contents of every archive box at the Gettysburg. Her research is impeccable and she touches upon virtually every significant issue and controversy regarding the park of which I have ever been aware – and then some. I will not repeat some of the remarks found in other reviews here but just add some additional observations.The author is not afraid to delve into the minutiae of the controversies over the years concerning such things as landscape issues (including clearing trees and brush), the erection of battlefield tablets, exhibits, visitor center and Cyclorama building issues, visitor “amenities,†and the encroachment of commercial interests around and into the battlefield. In doing so, she necessarily casts a critical eye on various actors during this 80-year period, including Superintendents, the NPS, local and federal politicians, local citizenry and business interests, and GNMP guides (though her criticism of the guides seems confined to a previous era, contrary to the view of another reviewer). It would indeed be a boring book if Dr. Murray did not add these analytical views, even if the reader may not agree with all of them.Of course, the planning and construction of the new GNMP Visitor Center brought to a head the growing controversy in the late 1900s between those who wanted to focus solely on the battle itself and the valor of both Union and Confederate soldiers (generally described as favoring a “reconciliation†approach) versus those believing it was time to change the emphasis to slavery as the primary cause of the Civil War and to promote education on the subject at GNMP and elsewhere. This controversy had been brewing for many years but reached a climax with the new visitor center. Dr. Murray covers both sides of the arguments on this contentious issue quite well.At times, Dr. Murray does stray into using some disappointing terminology. Her use of the term “heritage syndrome†of course suggests some unfortunate medical condition in those favoring the traditional approach and will alienate some readers. Her contention in her final chapter that veterans after the war supporting the park “initially manufactured†a reconciliationist narrative (p. 187) is pejorative to those veterans who honestly felt that way and is not supported by her narrative in Chapter 1. To be sure, many veterans overlooked the issue of race, but that does not mean they “manufactured†or fabricated their views. Of course, there were also many Union soldiers who did not overlook the issue, scoffed at the idea of reconciliation, and yet still supported the creation of the GNMP.It would be too much to expect the new Visitor Center and the GNMP as a whole to please everyone. America as a society has been unable to reconcile its conflicting views on race and even how we discuss them, so how can we expect the GNMP to resolve them? I believe the new Visitor Center has done as fine a job as it could taking into account the diametrically opposed and varying opinions.Dr. Murray has done an excellent job with this absorbing study. Her study rivals those of Timothy Smith who has set the gold standard in Civil War battlefield management studies. While I would not recommend the book to someone who has not visited the battlefield or read a book on the battle, those who have basic familiarity with the battle and the park will find much rewarding reading.
Dr. Murray has gone above and beyond in her book, "On A Great Battlefield: The Making, Management, and Memory of Gettysburg National Military Park, 1933-2013." The modest size of the book is deceptive. With its typeset in 10/13 Adobe Caslon pro, 312 pages, detail, and extensive notes, it is encyclopedic in its content. "On A Great Battlefield" is readable and informative to anyone having an interest in the battlefield's place in the national conscience; it is timely and original for both a general and academic audience. Murray develops the theme of change over time chronologically in chapters that insightfully incorporate phrases from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address in the titles--as does the book's title. One does not have to be a Civil War historian to appreciate the subject. It is the story of the battlefield after the battle. There will never be "battle walks" to the sites of non historic woodlots, the Home Sweet Home Motel, or the National Tower, but how the battlefield has been shaped since the battle, is a story all its own. Murray's depth of research will be hard to assail. A critic may pick at the fringes, but the overall work is a definitive study. Indeed, "On A Great Battlefield" will be a contender for a significant academic prize (see comment) and, in the long run, a second edition; it is that important. Although the study of Gettysburg and the Civil War continues to focus the attention of historians and enthusiasts, it is somewhat surprising that no one has previously undertaken such a project. Even had they, more than likely they would not have been as dedicated to their subject as Jennifer Murray. "On A Great Battlefield" sets a high standard for its timeliness and historical excellence.

The public/private partnership to build the $103 million visitor center, the landscape rehabilitation, and the inclusion of exhibits presenting slavery, abolition, secession, Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s in the visitor center may well be studied and redirect the mission, tasks and future of the National Parks Service and its historical parks.The final years of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century is viewed as a watershed era in the story of the park. Excepting the years between 1933 and 1940, when the park had available funds from the New Deal, no other era contained the degree of expansion and improvement to the battlefield. Eight of the 11 chapters focus upon the era of 1946-2013. Though initially a Phd. dissertation, Murray's narrative in On A Great Battlefield is clear, concise, cogent and accessible to the general reader.
