About the Author
A.W. Tozer embarked upon a lifelong pursuit of God at the age of 17 after hearing a street preacher in Akron, Ohio. He was a self-taught pastor, writer, and editor whose powerful messages continue to grip the hearts and stir the souls of today's believers. Anyone who is familiar with the works of A.W. Tozer is well acquainted with his unusual abstract manner of delivery. His unique perspective on the scriptures make this book a treasure. If one is looking for a complete exegetical commentary this book will disappoint. If one is looking to mine the deeper lines of thought found in John's theological perspective this book will not fit that mold. To find that the reader would be more enlightened reading "The Gospel of John" by F.F. Bruce or any Johannine Commentary by Andreas Kostenberger.This book is a collection of highlights from sermons on the Gospel of John that were delivered by Tozer at his church in Chicago. The strength of this work is to note how someone like Tozer takes the writings of John which are abstract by nature and crafts them into a message that can speak to a broad audience. Tozer has a high view of God and that view is very clear in this set of messages. It is in fact that high view of God that makes his lectures on the incarnation so unique. Tozer also has a knack for taking the most complex ideas and making them so profoundly simple that it is impossible to miss his point.One of the premier chapters is one that was delivered on John 3:16. It is so antithetical to most presentations in the evangelical community. That passage is so profound and so deep that Tozer treats it with the gravity it deserves. Also one of the messages on the fifth chapter of John really shows how deep Tozer's understanding of theology was. In fact he shows a great depth of familiarity with early christian thought but is able to break it into small and manageable chunks. Having read a lot on John's Gospel I think that this book is very refreshing and inspirational. Definitely worth the reading.
I have not read a lot of Tozer, keeping mostly to academic material. Nevertheless, this book is a wonderful series of sermons from the Gospel of John that will put you in wonder and awe. Tozer's crafts words in such a way that I have found myself constantly stopping and thinking about what has been said. This is not a difficult book, nor are the chapters long. It is a thoughtful book that you will benefit from. Don't try to copy Tozer's style, but enjoy his words as they open up corners of your mind that you just haven't noticed were so dusty.
I realize that this is a compilation of some of Tozer's work but there is something missing. I believe it is in the interpretation. This book was recommended for further study on the Gospel of John and that it does not do. It relies more on the Prologue (John 1:1-18) than on the rest of the book. I expected so much more. Some may differ.
Come on it's Tozer after all and the gospel of John. Two explosive combinations make this book a winner as it is Tozer's sermons on John as he preached them over the course of a year gleaning the best for the book. Enjoy Tozer's work at it's finest. I read this for a graduate studies level class and was thrilled to have found it.
I have just finished reading this as part of a seminary course. Tozer is well known and his passion for the gospel is apparent. I look at each chapter as a monograph on a substantive attribute of Christ and what it means to the believer. Worth the effort to read IMHO.
And He Dwelt Among Us is an excellent book that should be read by every Christian today. Our society and especially the church can learn much from the observations of Tozer. I hope and pray that many more will read his writings.
Tozer is an amazing teacher. I have always found the Gospel of John to be a difficult Gospel to understand.. I felt as though the presentation of Jesus was significantly different than the other Gospels. This book I found to be clear and conscience and to be written by a man of conscience. I recommend it to anyone struggling or anyone looking to learn more about the subject!
Tozer is one of the most quotable theological writers of all time. The beauty and simplicity with which he can convey a message speaks to all levels of education and faith. Though not a full exposition of the Gospel of John, the sections he writes on are excellent.
