Today, photojournalist David Rubinger stands at the peak of his profession: a winner of the Israel Prize for services to the media and a fixture on the masthead of Time, he is the only photographer whose work is on permanent display at the Knesset, Israel's legislature. In this fascinating volume, he reports his own story, which in many ways reflects the history of Israel that he has recorded so faithfully with his camera. Born in Vienna in 1924, he emigrated to British Palestine in 1939 and developed a passion for photography while serving in the British army's Jewish Brigade. After fighting in Israel's War of Independence, he became a professional news photographer, reporting on each of his young nation's subsequent wars from the front lines, at first for the Israeli media and later as a correspondent for Time-Life. He photographed all of Israel's leaders, many of whom have allowed him a remarkable degree of access to their lives; Ariel Sharon said, "I trust Rubinger even though I know he doesn't vote for me." We all know his signature photo of the paratroopers at the Western Wall in 1967 but through this book we learn the story of David Rubinger which is also the story of Israel. Rubinger emigrated to Israel after his service in the British Army in WWII. Then he had a front row seat as a Time and local paper photographer and reluctant journalist for all the action until his recent death.Rubinger also photographed the action in the US, and more remote and typically war torn spots like Cyprus and Morocco. Hard to imagine now but he or his wife would frequently fly to New York with film to make the weekend publication cut-off for Time. Sometimes he would skip weekend events since he could not make the upcoming edition.This book is his one attempt at autobiography and he pulls it off very well. Just the right mix of celebrity, history, war zone excitement, trepidation of starting a new life in a strange land, gratitude for surviving a terrible war, and reflection on a life well lived, with deep and meaningful personal relationships.Rubinger looked up the paratroopers from 1967 photo and took several anniversary photos. They all turned out to be very successful and fully understand the impact of that war on the world.
Since I have always loved his famous photo of the 3 soldiers crying at the liberation of the Western Wall, I was curious to read this book. What an interesting man. Rubinger seems to have lived a dozen lifetimes and his stories of the history of Israel and the war are really amazing. My only wish is that the photographs featured in the book were printed larger.
As a photographer, I loved this book. As good as the photographs are, the writing is even better. Great stories about working as a Time photographer in the Mid East, growing up in Europe during WWII, and wonderful vignettes about Israeli leaders. Highly recommended.
